Alert message

Data privacy and security in cloud environments is an ongoing issue. Guidelines for customers to observe when undertaking a risk assessment for their use of cloud services include information on facilities, networks, systems, applications, and data. An emphasis is also placed on confidentiality, integrity and availability.

To view a sample of what to look for, enter the phrase: "guidelines for use of cloud services" into your favourite search engine (e.g. Google, bing or Yahoo!).

The most important issues in cloud usage are:

  • security of access;
  • data integrity;
  • data retention; and
  • certainty of availability of the service(s).

You need to know what will happen if the service goes offline, and what compensation may be offered for loss of service and/or data. It is even more important to know what will happen if the service provider goes out of business or into liquidation.
